Guidelines to Follow After Your Hand Surgery

Post-Surgery Care and Expectations
1
Remember to keep your hand and dressings clean and dry until your first Hand Therapy appointment (around 10-14 days after your surgery), you can shower with a plastic bag covering the hand.
2
Your crepe dressing should be left intact until your first visit with Hand Therapy. If the top dressing is loose or falls off, there is a second water resistant dressing underneath. However, you still need to shower with a bag over the hand.
3
During the period of time between your surgery and your first Hand Therapy appointment, you can move your fingers and perform light tasks (ie. typing, using a phone/computer/iPad, using utensils, brushing of hair and teeth). You DO NOT need to avoid moving your fingers.
4
Avoid applying heavy pressure on your wound and lifting or pushing heavy objects. This is to protect the wound while it is healing.
5
Unless your surgery was to treat fracture, most patients will feel comfortable enough to drive 5-7 days after surgery.
6
Your sutures will be removed by your hand therapist during your first appointment with them.
7
After the sutures are removed you can work on desensitising your wound as shown by your therapist and gradually increase the load on your hand.
8
Most patients will have mild discomfort around the wound for 10-12 weeks, especially when performing heavier activities/tasks.
9
There will be one post-operative clinical follow-up appointment made for you to see Mr. Cheng at 6-8 weeks after your operation.
